Just One Thing with Razi Shadmehry
Razi Shadmehry’s flash “The Green House” gives us breathless prose that cracks open to show us both the inside of the house and of the central “you.” Here she shares just one thing about the piece:
“This piece began as an exercise in writing a story in one sentence. Multiple sentences definitely function better, but it was a fun starting point. I wanted the story to have a sense of urgency, the way I felt when I was in college and ‘having fun’ all the time. Seven of us lived in this huge, beautiful old home. We’d wreck it and wake up and talk about how it was all so funny, how we were really living, but I remember feeling vastly unknown and unfulfilled. I believed that if I just had another beer, sent another text, saw the right person come through the door, or stayed up till sunrise, something would click. It was never true, and subconsciously I was probably running away from the metaphorical period, if you will, afraid of facing whatever truth might exist at the end of perpetual chaos.”
