Just One Thing with Sarah Lao
Sarah Lao’s May issue poem “Ponyo (2008) Dreams in Tectonic Scales” is as vivid as its Studio Ghibli namesake. Here she shares just one thing about the piece:
"I rarely write (well) in the morning or with a group of people, but surprisingly, I wrote most of ‘Ponyo (2008) Dreams of Tectonic Scales’ during a morning club meeting for my school literary magazine. In general, I’m obsessed with water for its properties: polarity, cohesion, conductivity, etc, and Ponyo was my first and favorite Miyazaki film. I’ve forgotten most of its details, but I like how my memory casts Ponyo in this blurry, filtered light. I doubt I’ll ever be willing to rewatch any of my childhood favorites out of some fear that I’ll lose something.”
