Just One Thing with Hallie Haller
Hallie Haller’s May issue artwork “Why Wait” is, in a word, delicious. Here she shares just one thing about the piece:
“I'm the eldest in a family of four daughters. During deep lockdown and winter in Johannesburg, my youngest sister visited me. I kinda loathe women's day because it's usually more of a marketing endeavor than a moment of real change for women. But this passed women's day, we decided to photograph Drew at a banquet. Because my youngest sister is such a woman of small, intentional luxuries and self-care, it felt right to articulate her that way in photographs. We actually argued quite extravagantly through the process. It was tough for her to move through the discomfort of being photographed - even though she is arrestingly beautiful. It was really meaningful for us to move through that together. This photograph of her that's Split Lip’s May cover - with a mouthful of cake - is one of the final photographs we took that day. The sun was setting in Brixton. Pedestrians were catching glimpses of Drew literally placing her full face into a frosted cake. We started laughing uncontrollably. That moment is burned into my mind. I love all my three sisters quite fiercely. And I'm really grateful to have this memory with one of them. And to have this memory live beyond the two of us.”
