Just One Thing with A.C. Koch

A.C. Koch’s January issue story “Dog Chasing Waves” is perhaps the only instance on the entire internet where you should actually read the comments. Here he shares just one thing about the piece:

“I'm fascinated with how unconventional formats can be used for storytelling. My favorite example of this is Jennifer Egan's chapter/story in A Visit from the Goon Squad which is told entirely through a presentation slide deck. Despite the formal limitations, the pathos and drama are undiminished. DOG CHASING WAVES is my attempt to twist the unpromising realm of an online comment thread into a frame for a story that hits on deep themes of death and grief. It also provided an opportunity to troll the trolls. More than anything, it's an effort to remind myself that there are stories embedded in the world all around us, all the time, and how rewarding it can be to find ways to read them.”
