Split Lip Magazine is looking for micro reviews of recently released short literary work!
Got a close reading of a single poem you love in the notes app of your phone? Maybe there was a line in a short story that’s been haunting you? Perhaps there’s an essay that everyone needs to be reading? Whatever it might be, send a review of it to us!
Part literary analysis and part praise, micro reviews should explicate and investigate, both on a line/sentence level and beyond. Don’t just tell us what the piece is directly saying or what’s happening—tell us about the worlds these works embody and use supporting textual evidence. Is the piece doing something others aren’t? How does the structure or voice support the meaning? How does this work compare with other pieces in the same contemporary ballpark? Where does it fail, where does it succeed? Be curious and exacting: Tell us the greater conversations and ideas these pieces are having and pushing towards.

💋Submission Guidelines💋
Pieces reviewed must have been published within the last six months in a literary magazine.
Reviews must be of written literary work—short stories, essays, and poems only. While it is okay to contextualize the piece within the author’s larger body of work, don’t review the whole book a short work appears in!
Include the publication info for what you’re reviewing and a link so folks can read (Twitter is fine)!
Please don’t review your own work or the work of a friend, family member, or loved one!
We also will not accept submissions that feature work which appears in a magazine that you currently work or previously worked for in an editorial capacity at the time the piece was published.
No more than three micro reviews per submission at a time, please.
Previously unpublished reviews only.
250-500 words per review, including titles and relevant symbols—backslashes, ampersands, etc.
