Summertime Picnics!

To celebrate our Summertime issue for Black voices, we asked our contributors to tell us about their favorite picnic foods. Grab a basket and spread out your blanket!

My favorite summertime picnic food is fried chicken, watermelon wedges and/or a strawberry/blueberry mix, an arugula salad with a homemade vinaigrette, and a chilled bottle of Prosecco. My favorite picnic spot is in any park under a tree.

Cheeseburgers! I grew up in a family with a huuuuge bias against beef so summer picnics at the houses of friends or relatives were some of the only occasions I’d have to eat cheeseburgers. My image of summer is very much tied to outdoor grilling, even though I myself don’t have enough hand-eye coordination to be trusted around a grill.
