Just One Thing with Vincent James Perrone

Vincent James Perrone’s story “Collaboration” contains attempts to decouple, wine stains, rabbit bites, and the afterlife. Here he shares just one thing about the piece:

“The couple in the bat costume. That really happened. I didn't know them, but they appeared at an acquaintance's Halloween party many years ago in Detroit. I never learned their names, nor did I watch them fight. They danced together—very well, I might add. And they never took off their cowls, so I couldn't see much of their faces. Eventually, when the party was winding down, someone asked where the bats were. We looked out the window and saw them making out in an old Buick. You can't make these things up. I hope they're still together.”

The author sits on a couch beside hand-sewn pillows in a rented cabin in rural Michigan.
