The initial seed for this story came from a friend describing a flock of grackles hopping up and down from a tree for quite a while. This odd image rolled around in my mind until a possible rationale emerged for their behavior. When I tied it to apocalypses and catastrophes, both personal and global, the rest of this universe trickled forth.
