Just One Thing with Parth Shah

Semi-crowded kitchen counter spread with vegetables – butternut squash, lemon, garlic, red onion – waiting to be cut. The chef's fingernails are covered with produce label stickers.

Parth Shah’s flash “Spinach” uses supermarket produce to guide us through the course of a relationship, from freshness to wilt. Here he shares just one thing about the piece:

“Back in 2019, when my now-partner and I were still coyly dating, we'd meet up at least once a week to cook a meal together. 'Aute Cuture' by Rosalía was always part of the soundtrack. Inspired by the music video, we'd peel off the oval labels from our onions and bell peppers and stick them on our fingernails, lip syncing with our hands as we sauteed.

I imagine the characters in 'Spinach' listening to Rosalía, too.”
