Just One Thing with Natalie Fontanez

Natalie Fontanez’s artwork “Sticky” zooms us into the irrevocable moment when you can’t unstep in that gum. Here she shares just one thing about the piece:

“The main subject of this illustration is a pair of cheap H&M loafers I wore throughout high school. They were uncomfortable and falling apart but I kept them on my shoe rack for years. I finally dusted them off last year to use for a few quick reference photos. Looking back, maybe this piece came from the discomfort and awkwardness I felt as a teen girl, or maybe I just wanted to squeeze the last possible drop of usefulness I could from these crappy shoes. I finished the illustration and finally tossed them, saying goodbye to a small part of my teenage self.”
