Just One Thing with Moisés R. Delgado

Moisés R. Delgado’s story “The moon is a white corn tortilla, the night a sizzling comal, and the stars are parmesan cheese because God loves quesadillas with his nightly cafecito” pulls us into the beliefs, grief, and always-busy kitchen of the collective narrator’s tía. Here he shares just one thing about the piece:

“Lately, I've been experimenting with humor. More specifically, I've been trying to make myself laugh. I know I'm not the only one who loves to entertain doubt (too much doubt) when writing, so making myself laugh has been my new escape. That's why the title is as absurd as it is--it's how the story began really. Instead of heaven, I thought it would be funny if this aunt believed the sky to be one of God's favorite dishes. So even when the final form of a story doesn't end up being that funny, I've found that my strongest work lately has been the stories that began as something that made me laugh.”

Because sweets can solve it all: here is my sister (around two at the time), her hair in short and messy pigtails, and me (around four-years-old) sitting beside her. We're in pjs. We used to love yogurt, so our lips and chins are smothered in strawbe
