Just One Thing with Miles Coleman

Miles Coleman’s June issue story “Breadlosers” is a tale of what you can and can’t see in the cards. Here he shares just one thing about the piece:

“In fall of 2016, I was interested in the aversion to sentimentality that seemed to surround fiction workshops at that time and wanted to see if I could write a pining, gushing, over-the-top love story that incorporated sentimentality as a kind of character flaw. Originally, I titled the draft ‘Love Song for Genevieve.’ When I showed it to my teacher, Sam Lipsyte, he underlined the word ‘breadlosers’ and wrote: ‘this is the title.’”
