Laurie Uttich’s January issue memoir “Because My Boyfriend Got Somebody Else Pregnant, I Decided to Go to College” is about stumbling into something better. Here she shares just one thing about the piece:

“To me, the most surprising thing about this little essay is that in 1985 I could walk into an admissions office uninvited, sit down, be accepted without any paperwork, and allowed to enroll. Can you imagine that today? All three of my sons attend (or attended) college and damn! What a process it is now! And I was an average student, at best. I'd never be accepted at the university where I work today. It's way more shocking to me than some teenage kid who wanted to be with someone else. But, of course, at the time, I was crushed, although I imagine he would have a very Ross-like, ‘We were on a break!’ response. And who knows? We might have been. We were ‘that’ couple and I'm still bad at math.”
