“Aside from Wikipedia TV summaries and Carmen Maria Machado’s ‘Especially Heinous: 272 Views of Law & Order SVU,’ this story owes so much to the 2014 Adult Swim short Too Many Cooks. Machado’s story gave me a blueprint to write after, but Cooks’ tonal shift and energy were exactly what I wanted to harness here. Once I allowed myself to have the kind of fun I felt watching that short, I punched the whole thing out over one working afternoon.”
