Just One Thing with Dante Fuoco

Dante Fuoco’s essay “We’ve Got War to Cover” directs us to look hard at the difficult, the uncomfortable, the forgotten. Here Dante shares just one thing about the piece:

“‘We've got war to cover’ was rejected 16 times before Split Lip Magazine accepted it. Since writing the first draft in 2022, the piece has gone through many revisions. I'm a fairly impatient person, so this prolonged process has pained me. But the older I get, the more I appreciate the rejections and the failed attempts. I'm getting better at letting the fields lie fallow. I'm relieved ‘We've got war to cover’ wasn't accepted earlier: the piece wasn't ready, and neither was I. These past three years, I've not only been able to hone my craft but also do the spiritual work needed to share this piece with the world.”

Dante—a white queer with hazel eyes, brown hair, and moustache—looks directly at camera in a sunny room. Dante wears a blue shirt covered with drawings of fish and whales.
