Danielle Shorr’s illustrated January issue memoir “My Neighbors Can See My Nipples and Other Observations” is something to behold, to say the least. Here she shares just one thing about the piece:

“I actually came up with the title for this essay before I even wrote it. I kind of tweeted about it as a joke...and then actually started working on it. It started off as something silly that morphed into being more truthful than I originally intended. A piece about how my neighbors have undoubtedly seen me in the nude became a piece about solitude as a consequence of self-neglect and abusive relationships. It’s also a great way for me to show my breasts in a socially acceptable format (this is a joke, but also kind of not a joke).

I usually draw before I write but for this piece, the drawings and writing switched off in terms of order. This definitely feels like one of the most vulnerable things I’ve written in a while, so I’m glad it has a home here.”

We’re glad it has a home here, too!
