In Print: Vol. 1

Dear Reader,

2017 was an extraordinary year. Extraordinary in the way the Loch Ness Monster is extraordinary. Unlikely. Improbable. Terrifying up close.

In light of these extraordinary times, we emailed, half-joking, half- stupefied from panic-scrolling Twitter, What if we launched a print issue? Would that be crazy?

Everything’s crazy! someone wrote.

Then in all caps: CRAZY. 🤡

And so our very first print issue was born.

For the last year, we traded palm-sized devices for reading and editing on paper. We tested paper stock and scoured artists’ portfolios. We arranged and re-arranged our layout. We read six hundred submissions per month to find the voices you’ll see here.

A literary magazine’s print issue is permanent. We only get one chance to distill it into scintillating soundbites. It can’t be edited or muted or deleted. But it can be held in your hand. Read from front to back and back to front. Our very first print issue is simply words, shaped into stories, poems, and memoirs.

Unlikely. Improbable. Extraordinary.

Yours,
KAR
