Moira Ness (@moiraness) is a self-taught emerging photo-based artist specializing in contemporary landscapes and algorithm-based writing. Her current body of work, entitled Cyclical, explores and experiments with Nietzsche’s theory of eternal recurrence. This theory states all events in cosmic history have repeated, and will continue to repeat, in an endless cycle. Moira explores this idea through visual and written repetition. She selects focal points of a photo to repeat and digitally manipulates the repetitions to blend seamlessly into the natural background. The limb of a tree is mirrored and then blended to match the opposite foliage. The finished editing does not stand out, but rather is discovered through a mix of closer inspection and the mind’s habitual recognition of subtle patterns, symmetry, and discrepancies. She utilizes algorithms to create repetition based written work with source text from various past personal social media platforms (MSN Messenger, Blogger, Twitter). She was a finalist for RMG Exposed 2016, a finalist and overall winner for the 2017 UNTAPPED Emerging Artist Competition for The Artist Project and a finalist for SNAP! 2017 Photo Auction. Moira participated in two 2017 summer art exhibitions; the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition and the New Art Festival, in Ottawa. She won the Emerging Artist Award at the Toronto Outdoor Art Festival and was also shortlisted for the Founding Chairman’s Award. Moira will be showing her work at NordArt in Büdelsdorf, Germany in the summer of 2017. She was recently was the artist-in-residence at The 108 Residency in Upstate New York. Find her online.
